Apple Denies Facebook Blocking

Despite reports that the Internet-enabled Macs at Apple’s retail stores aren’t allowing customers to log on to Facebook, Apple says it doesn’t limit access to the popular social-networking site.

“Apple does not block Facebook,” an Apple spokesman said. Facebook is integrated into the company’s iLife suite, which Apple Store workers regularly demo at the retail locations.

The rumor started on tech news site tinyComb, and other outlets began checking it out, some saying the site was indeed blocked, others saying it wasn’t. A CNET reporter tried a few in-store Macs herself, with mixed results.

Facebook spokesman Barry Schnitt said he didn’t know whether any stores were, in fact, limiting Facebook access, but said “I guess with the economy being what it is, some Apple stores are forcing people to buy the computers before they are able to do what people increasingly want to do with their computer — use Facebook.”

Social networks just can’t get a break. Elsewhere, Maryland’s General Assembly blocked both Facebook and MySpace, saying in a memo that “a significant increase in viruses and malware affecting the Maryland General Assembly computers” were coming from the two sites.

“We realize that this may be an inconvenience and we apologize. But it is essential that the integrity of the Maryland General Assembly computer systems and facilities are protected,” the memo said.

MySpace declined to comment on the matter but said it takes extensive steps to protect users from security threats. Facebook’s Mr. Schnitt had a bit more to say. “We believe, and the delegates we’ve heard from have expressed dismay, that Maryland is taking a tremendous step backward.”

“We have invested significant resources in protecting our users and, as a result, only a very small percentage of Facebook users have been impacted by security issues,” he added. “The Maryland General Assembly can further limit exposure by making sure employees run up-to-date browsers with phishing blacklists and anti-virus software. Also, they have a captive audience and an opportunity, and perhaps even an obligation, to educate legislators and staff on security best practices.”

“I know why you’re calling,” said Alexandra Hughes, communications director for Maryland’s Speaker of the House, when contacted. She clarified that the ban, which went into effect Thursday, affects legislators and their employees on legislative computers — not all state workers.

It’s possible the department will revisit the decision if there’s a way to enable Facebook and MySpace access while maintaining the security of its servers, she said. At the moment, she added, “dealing with a $2 billion deficit is paramount.”

PearC launced three models named PearC Starter at 499,00€ , PearC Advanced at 799,00€ and PearC Professional at 1499,00€.The company advertises the PearC computer as “the PC with Mac OS X.” Apple’s EULA (End User License Agreement) clearly states that only Apple hardware is allowed to run Mac OS X Leopard. Apple even claims it is against its rules to as much as “enable” others to install OS X Leopard on non-Apple computers but companies like Psystar & now PearC have no effect on their buisness.

PearC systems are available under three forms: the PearC Starter, which sells for 499,00 € (minimum configuration), the PearC Advanced, going for 799,00€ (minimum configuration) and the PearC Professional, which starts at 1.499,00 €. iPhone Firmware 2.2.1 Features Exposed to the World !?!

Click the image to open in full size.

Apple has not launched a new firmware for quite sometime (not even a small update) since the release of 2.2 version So, we all are excited about the new features coming in the next release but, the leaked feature list doesn't seem to be doing much justice with our aspirations!

Though none of these new features have been confirmed in anyway, they seem to be enough for a small update. First, this new update will include a number of bug fixes which an end-user would rarely even notice. These fixes include fixing the super slow sync speeds which many users (including me) face daily on a PC. The new features are not really big, but include certain interface changes in the SMS application interface and some new features for the Mail application targeting the Corporate users. Another feature which is said to be under beta is deleting all mails at once rather than selecting each in the Mail application. This new version is speculated to release in the upcoming few weeks.

Also, there is another rumor that the next major 2.3 update, which has no confirmed release date will include some sort of option for Bluetooth synchronization with iTunes - but I think this is highly unlikely due to Apple's non-seriousness about other bluetooth issues on iPhone.

Team,

I am sure all of you saw my letter last week sharing something very personal with the Apple community. Unfortunately, the curiosity over my personal health continues to be a distraction not only for me and my family, but everyone else at Apple as well. In addition, during the past week I have learned that my
health-related issues are more complex than I originally thought.

In order to take myself out of the limelight and focus on my health, and to allow everyone at Apple to focus on delivering extraordinary products, I have decided to take a medical leave of absence until the end of June.

I have asked Tim Cook to be responsible for Apple’s day to day operations, and I know he and the rest of the executive management team will do a great job. As CEO, I plan to remain involved in major strategic decisions while I am out. Our board of directors fully supports this plan.

I look forward to seeing all of you this summer.

Steve

Macworld Keynote Close-Up

Some cool new stuff was announced today, and as I'm writing this, the keynote is barely over.

So Phil started off with a new version of iLife, iLife 09, including new versions of all the parts, iMovie, iPhoto, GarageBand, etc. Upgrade is $79 and $99 for a Family Pack, up to 5 Macs. Next was iWork 09, Phil demoed new versions of Pages, Numbers and Keynote. Something that stood out was the ability to view full screen in Pages. Also announced, was a Keynote remote, available as $.99 application, available soon in the App Store.

Next up was the new 17 inch MacBook Pro. As rumored, it has a non-removable battery, up to an 8 hour charge. Same style as the new MacBook and Pro's, except you can buy a non-glossy screen attachment for $50.

Finally, was iTunes. Currently, 8 out of 10 million songs on iTunes are now DRM free, the rest are due to be DRM free by the end of the quarter. Also, new prices for music are: $.69, $.99, and $1.29, which are available in April. Now with an iPhone 3G, you can now download music from the store, over 3G.

Well folks, that about sums up the Keynote. Thanks for reading!

PS. Tony Bennet was the special musical guest.
